RANDOM NOTES

Recommended books:

Andrew Keen's The Cult of the Amateur

This is a thoughtful paen to the value of expertise, to the professional, to intelligence, to innovation, and creativity over the ego of the amateur. Unfortunately, the Internet facilitates the proliferation of content by anyone, including those who find value in the insubstantial, the erroneous, and the deceptive. Yes, there is high-quality, edited, even peer-reviewed knowledge on the Net, but, as Keen describes, the amateur content, the valuing of the amateur, is destroying the industries and professions that advance our cultural milieu. The direction Keen thinks we are going was also forecast in the 1951 Cyril Kornbluth short story, "The Marching Morons."

Chris Anderson's The Long Tail

On the other hand, the Web is enabling the proliferation of content and creative products from niche sources that never have been able to make it through the editorial or marketing processes, though usually with good reason. But the "hits," the music, the books, the products that claim a major market share are only a small segment of the range of content that is really out there. Much of it is crap, but there is occasional worth, occasional art, occasional intellectual value. The problem is parsing out the quality from that crap, but, at least, everyone has a chance to put out "A dark and stormy night..." or be "Grandma Moses."
