Notes  

• Do the type of search ONLY as specified by the header.
• I intend my exercises to be serious learning experiences, not just a search for answers. Consequently, they require creative thought about using the techniques you have learned. They also require you, in most cases, to look at the contents of the MARC record that answers each question.
• Some questions require more than one step to get an answer. In other words, it may not be obvious.
• You are often given imperfect, erroneous information when asked to do a search. There are no intended errors in the questions below, but I have made unintended errors in the past.
• I have no problem with you helping each other think about or develop strategies to solve these problems because:
  • Each person has different ways of understanding and approaching problems.
  • You gain by the insights that others may have.
• On the other hand, I expect each person to answer the questions herself/himself.
• Automatic 10% off if the exercise is late, NO EXCEPTIONS. You, of course, have the options of emailing or mailing your answer sheets to me if you can not attend the class.
  • Email: I must receive the email on the date the assignment is due. Put "RLIN Assignment" in the Subject of the email.
  • Mail: The envelope must be postmarked no later than the date the assignment is due.
• I very much prefer that your answers be typed . This is college, afterall, but clear communication is vital in any field. You can, though, write the answers if you block print very clearly and cleanly.
  • I WILL NOT accept answers written in script.
  • I WILL subtract for an answer sheet that is difficult to read or incomprehensible (miniminally 0.5 points).

Grading 

• Maximum credit for each answer depends on
  • Providing the right answer(s),
  • Using a correct search statement as specified by the type of question, and
  • Readability of the answer.

Formats for Your Answer Sheet

• 1st Alternative: You can type your answers on a separate sheet. Use the following format.

  	Put your name in the upper right-hand corner. Put "Assignment 3: RLIN" below that. Put the date you turn it in below that
  Type your SEARCH STATEMENTS and ANSWERS or neatly print them (as noted above) on lined paper in the same order they are given and in following example format: Example: search 1. S: A: 2. S: A: B: etc.

• 2nd Alternative: You Can Print Out This Page (it will take several sheets)

  Again, be sure that you either 1) type your SEARCH STATEMENTS and ANSWERS or 2) neatly print them (as noted above) on lined paper in the same order they are given and in following example format:

  • In the upper right hand corner of the first page put:
    • Your name
    • Assignment 3: RLIN below that.
    • The date you turn it in below that
  • In the Answer (Use the right field if you use this form.) Put:
    • Your SEARCH STATEMENTS and ANSWERS . Type them or neatly print them (as noted above) in the empty field to the right of the question.

QUESTIONS: There are 30 questions, each worth 0.5 point.

• Note: These 30 questions have 2 or 3 parts each, but you only have to do one (1) search in most cases. Looking at the appropriate parts of the right record will provide the anwers to each part in most cases.

Sect.1: GENERAL QUESTIONS:

Example: What file would you use to search for books in Germany?

4.	A patron wants an interlibrary loan on a book she saw whose title had the following words: colorful ballet. A. What is the title? B. What NY library (name, not just code) has a copy of the book? Just one (1)library will do.
5.	Write one statement to finds the specific book that has the phrase "how the west" and the word "forgotten" somewhere in the title? A. What is the title of the book? B. What is the LC call number? (050 field)
6.	A. What is the year of the first edition of Shakespeare's poem "Venus and Adonis." It was published before 1600 by a printer whose name was "Richard Field." (Use the date in the 260 field.) Do NOT use BKS, CUC, DBD, or NLA. B. Where was the poem to be sold?
7.	There are a series of graphics titled : Not Wanting to Say Anything About Marcel." A. Who are the graphics in memory of? B. Who is the artist? (Notice that the name is in the 100 field.)

8.	A singer is looking for a symphonic score by one of those "Schu..." composers (like Schubert or Schumann or ....). She doesn't remember which composer it was, but the title was "Landschaften." A. What is the composer's name? B. What kind of voice does the singer have?
9	A. Give the title of a work by Osama bin Laden that is in English. Try to access the document via the online link. B. What message do you get in the final screen?
10.	Do an exact name search. A. What book has been published in London this year (2003) that was written by Stephen King? (Note: Not the hyphenated name.) B: What is the list price for the book? (Look in the 020 field, but think carefully about this.)
11.	A person wants to find an old Alaskan advertising newspaper. It was edited by someone named "griffin" and had the word "Alaska" in the title. A. What is the of the newspaper? B: Where was it actually published?

Sect.4: DO CORPORATE/CONFERENCE (cp, cw) NAME SEARCHES - You may have to add an additional field(s) to search.

12.	A. Provide the title of an album by the band Black Tape for a Blue Girl that was issued after 1989. B. There may be a song on it about an "icy floe." What is the title?
13.	A. How many motion pictures were put out by the various Paramount ... operations (eg., Paramount Pictures, Paramount Home Video, etc.) on "videodisc" in 2001 and 2002 (total of the two years).( Give the number of clusters.) Note: What field would you look for "videodisc" in? B. Find the notes field in which DVD is entered as the format (NOT the 440 filed), and redo the search except looking for DVDs not videodiscs. How many do you find?
14.	A. How many clusters result by a search for serials from organizations who have skeptic or skeptics in their name. B. Which serial is owned by the Cornell University?
15.	How many record albums have been published by Mercury/Wing, which is sometimes also listed as Mercury-Wing or Mercury Wing. (What field can you use if cp or cw does not work?) There are 2 ways. to search for this . One gets about 72 clusters and .4 points for this question. One gets about 128 clusters and gets the full credit (.5). Yes, you can get .9 for showing both methods.

Sect.5: DO SUBJECT SEARCHES - You may have to add an additional field(s) to search.

16	Do the broadest subject search (looking for RECALL) you can about anything related to woman or women and . How many clusters did you get (must be at least 460)?
17.	There was a book with the word "Atlantis" in the title that was about free diving. A. What is the title of the book? You will have to do a title search and a subject phrase search for any record that has do do with free diving . (Requires finding the correct LCSH subject heading, because you may not be able to find the book otherwise.)|
18.	A. How many clusters do you get from a subject phrase search on "skin diving?" B. How many clusters do you get from a subject word search on "skin diving?"
19.	George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin negotiated a major treaty in 2002 . A. What is the name of the treaty? (Ignore the result that is B. What is the date of the "adopted" (not "draft") "resolution?"

Sect.6: SEARCH FOR SERIALS (They may NOT all be in the Serials File.) - You may have to add an additional field(s) to search.

Example: History and Politics Review or, maybe, "Studies," and possibly from a university with Australia in its name

21.	Do NOT use the ser file. A. Provide the title of an online serial with "journal" and "emergency" in the title that is published in Laguna Hills, California. B. How does the 516 field describe the journal?
22.	What is the title of the serial with the International Standard. Serial No. 0162-766X?
23.	One of the Getty foundations or trusts publishes a periodical about art history that has a related Web site A. What is the title? B. What is the corporate author? Hints: Use the appropriate MARC field for online items and think what would be in every one of those fields.

Sect.7: AUTHORITY FILE SEARCHES

25.	What are the number of headings that include the word "terrorism"? Use two methods. Show the search statement for eachand the number of headings. A. Find the subject word B. Browse "terrorism" as a heading phrase (hp) .
26.	What is the established Topical Term or Subject Heading for "ceramics industry"? (You will find this in MARC 150 fields.)

Sect.8: YOU SELECT THE DATABASE, FILE, & TYPE OF SEARCH

27.	Search for the ISBN 0123456789 A. How many clusters do you get? Look at record 19. It should be a book by an author named Kohn. B. What is the number in the ISBN field (20)?
28.	Find a record to show that Stanford University's Library owns a copy of "The Sims" software? A. What is the ID number for the record that list Stanford? B. Which Stanford library has the software" (Look in the "b" subfield of the 852 field.)
29.	An insurance group, "British Columbia ..." something, has published a map of Nanaimo, BC, that shows the insurance areas. A. What is the title? B. How many sheets does the map consist of?
30.	A student heard that an Australian library collects article cuttings on its citizens. She wants an article whose title mentioned a lost cousin's name and something about being a crocodile and buffalo hunter. A. What is his name? B. Give the 3-letter code (in field 040) for the library that has the cuttings. B. What is in the 856 field?
