How records are acquired
Libraries can acquire catalog
records
from the bibliographic utility ithrough several methods.
Downloading from online databases
Dedicated service
Many libraries have a dedicated line to OCLC and use OCLC client software.
This is the most common method for mid-to-large libraries.
Unfortunately, Passport software is only available for Windows-based systems.
Over the Internet
Via telnet to connect.oclc.org
Via the OCLC's Web site at http://connexion.oclc.org
Dial-in service
OCLC has many telephone numbers around the country that enable local dial-in to OCLC services.
Computer tape
Large libraries often license OCLC database contents on tape.
The tape is installed on a local server connected to the library automation system.

Lbraries can also license subsets of OCLC database contents on CDROM.
