OCLC offers 4 distinct types of searches:

TYPE of SEARCH

USE WHEN YOU HAVE
HOW to USE

TITLE PHRASE

All titles are placed in a Title Phrase index.

  • An exact title.
  • The first part of a title.
  • Can pick the title out of a list.
  • Scan (sca)
  • sca can be used in both the WorldCat (OL) and Authority Files (AF).

KEYWORD

  • Specific information that may be in various parts of a record.
  • Find (fin)
  • Use with index labels.
  • fin can not be used with Authority Files. (AF).

DERIVED SEARCH KEY SEARCHES

  • Title Key
  • Personal Name Key
  • Corporate/Conference Name Key
  • Combination Name/Title Key
  • A good idea of the title.
  • A good idea of a name.
  • A good idea of the C/C name.
  • Some knowledge of the name and title.
  • Find (fin) or Derived Key

NUMERIC KEY

  • Specific identifying numbers such as ISBN
  • Find (fin) or Key
