Searching RLIN: "Activities"

Scope

• There are several 3 major activities (also called "functions") that are pursued in the RLIN bibliographic database:
  • Cataloging (cat) (There is also a cat mai catalog maintenance function.)
  • Inter-Library Loan (ill)
  • Authority Files (aut)
  • Search (sea) - This is somewhatof a "guided" search.

Selecting / choosing activities:

• Selecting the file when calling RLIN:
  • Example: call rlin (cat) <ret>
• Selecting the file when in RLIN:
  • Example: call rlin (aut) <ret>
• Typing the file name when the "Activity?" prompt is displayed:
  • Example: Activity? ill <ret>

Catalog (cat)

• This is the primary "activity" or mode for:
  • Searching the RLIN bibliographic database, otherwise known as the Online Union Catalog (ol).
  • Cataloging purposes.

Inter-Library Loan (ill)

• This is the mode for:
  • Identifying the location of items for which you may want to arrange an inter-library loan.
  • Requesting such loans from remote libraries.

Authority (aut)

• This is the mode for:
  • Finding standard, "authoritative," names, subject headings, or other files to ensure the quality of local cataloging.
• Primary Authority files
  • Library of Congress Names Authority File (naf)
  • Library of Congress Subjects Authority File (saf)
  • Arts and Architecture Thesaurus (aat)
