Three Major Interfaces to RLG Databases

RLG offers three major interfaces to its databases

• Eureka
  • Web-based
  • Offers easier level of use, but, as is a web-based processing, inherently slower than purely text-based interfaces such as RLIN.
  • Can be accessed at eureka.rlg.org or eureka.ohio.rlg.org/eureka2.prod

• RLIN
  • Telnet-based
  • Can be accessed at : cobalt.rlg.org.
  • The primary interface for cataloging authority work, interlibrary loan, and archives and manuscripts processing.
    • Bibliographic record searching
      • This is possible in multiple languages ( JACKPHY Plus), including:
        • Japanese
        • Chinese
        • Arabic
        • Korean
        • Persian
        • Hebrew
        • Yiddish
        • Cyrillic scripts
    • Cataloging support, including:
      • Copy cataloging through downloading records
      • Marcadia automated batch cataloging service
      • Adding local records to the RLG databases
      • Collection Management, including:
        • Batch Record Modification
    • Authority files
    • Interlibrary loan facility
    • Special databases.
    • Archival and manuscript holdings maintenance
    • Acquisitions Processing
    • Report generation through the RLIN® Reports System (RRS)
      • Document delivery through the Ariel® Document Delivery service.
  • "RLIN Terminal for Windows" software has long been available to facilitate technical services operations using the RLG databases. A new Windows-based technical services client replaced it in 2003.

• Z39.50
  • This enables the use of the local library system's interface to access RLG databases. Z39.50 is an intermediate software standard that converts the local system's commands into those understood by the RLG databases.
  • This allows use of familiar commands for using the RLG bibliographic databases.
  • It requires a Z39.50 client software on the local computer as well as a Z39.50 server at the other end.
