Definitions

"cluster"

• A group of records from multiple libraries for the exact same edition of a work.

"library identifier" "li"

 

• A four-character code for institutions that are members of or contract with RLIN to contribute their holdings to the RLIN bibliographic files.
• To show the meaning of a specified library identifier: type
  • sho li <code> <ret>
• To show your own library identifier, type:
  • sho li <ret>
  • For the Foothill College Library Tech Program this brings back "cfoe"

"primary cluster member"

• A record in a cluster cataloged to the highest standard.
• Could also contain non-Roman data.
• Multiple ( mul ) and Primary ( pri ) displays show bibliographic data from the primary cluster member(s).
• Its li appears first in the list of li's for a cluster.
• Usually the first 4 letters of the ID are the library code for the primary cluster.

Primary Cluster Member	pri	A Single (1) cluster of records Partial bibliographic information for one item. RLIN list for records in the cluster Example: Type pri 3 to display the record for the primary member for item # 3.
Partial Record	par	Partial bibliographic information for a Single Record at one institution. Local call number Shelving location Acquisitions data, if any.Example: Type par 3 to display the item # 3 in partial format. Type par 3 <li code> to display the item # 3 in partial format at a particular institution.
Long (Catalog-card like)	lon	Complete bibliographic information for a Single Record. Includes subject headings, other added entries, and holdings. Type lon 3 to display document # 3 in long format. Type lon 3 <li code> to display document # 3 in long format at a particular institution.
Full (Fully MARC tagged)	ful	Complete bibliographic information for a Single Record. Includes Local Holdings and Processing information In a tagged RLIN MARC display. Type ful 3 to display document # 3 in a fully tagged MARC format. Type ful 3 <li code> to display document # 3 in a fully tagged MARC format at a particular institution.
