Database-
and Telecommunications-Related Protocols &
Standards
Scope
Accessing information in local or
remote databases requires that software comply with various
communications and database-format standards or protocols.
Some Relevant
Protocols & Standards
Z39.50
A intermediary protocol that
enables searching of remote library catalogs from the interface
that a user is familiar with on a local system.
This is a series of protocols
that provide the underlying "packet" communications and
addressing structure of the Internet.
HTTP
The Hypertext Transfer
Protocol provides the underlying format and addressing
structure for the World Wide Web.
HTML
The Hypertext Mark-up Language
facilitates the graphical display of information on the World
Wide Web through the use of Internet browsers.
SQL
The Structured Query Language
provides a standard way of accessing and requesting information
from SQL-supporting databases
ASCII
Standard for formatting,
storing, and communication of text
information.
binary number
system
The mathematical system based
on only two numbers, 0's and 1's.
These can also represent any
forms of data and instructions to computers as well, because
the 0's and 1's can represent the on and off states of the
transistors that make up large parts of processor and memory
integrated circuits.
The 0's and 1's are
represented by different polarized magnetic states of
iron-oxide particles on hard disks.
On CD-ROMs they 0's and 1's
may be represented by different amounts of reflectivity in
spots or holes on the disk
SRW ("Search/Retrieve for the
Web")
Web-service-based protocol
intended to provide integrated access across networked
resources and interoperability between distributed
databases/
SRW employs the Common Query
Language (CQL) as a search interface and the Z39.50
protocol.
