The
Most Commonly Used Databases: The Winner is Gale Group's
InfoTrac Databases
Scope
The most successful
journal/magazine databases, in terms of penetration of the broad
public/academic/school/special library market, are the Infotrac
databases marketed (in various configurations) by Gale Group
to all sorts of libraries.
The Infotrac databases are the
most successful ones in the academic, public, and, even, special
libraries market because:
These databases have mostly
been developed since the early 1980s..
Gale Group owns so many
databases and combines and recombines information in them to
make new databases.
Information Access (now
integrated into Gale Group, a subsidiary of the publishing
giant Thompson PLC) has had the most successful marketing of
all of the database producers. For example, the databases are
available through DIALOG and other database utilities as well
as directly to the libraries, companies, and the
public.
Gale Group has the advantage
of economies of scale.
It also has the backing of the
parent firm, Thompson Corp, which is a $15 billion
company.
