Searching Dialog: Downloading Results with Telnet
Scope
Most telnet programs have the capability of easily capturing text from the screen.
This is complemented by the
type
command of Dialog, which provides a continuous screen display of all the records that you have selected.
The following example uses
NCSA Telnet
, a common, free version of telnet downloaded from such Web sites as:
Download.com
(from CNET)
http://download.cnet.com
Tucows
http://www.tucows.com.
Process
We will assume you have just done a search
Your results are in set 5
(
s5
).
You want to download the full-text records (we will assume that it is format #
9
)
numbers 1, 3, 18-20.
Type
t
s5
/
9
/
1,2,18-20 but
DO NOT
hit the
<return>
button.
Do the following
before
hitting the
<return>
key:
Macintosh / NCSA Telnet Version
Click the mouse button on
Session
in the NCSA Telnet menu bar.
Pull the highlight down to the
Capture Session to File
line and release the mouse button.
All small window appears. Click on the pull-down menu at the top of the window and pull the highlight down to Desktop and release the mouse button.
Click on the icon representing your floppy disk.
Enter a name for the search record you are going to store on the floppy disk in the entry line below the "
Save captured text as
" line and click
save
.
Push the
<return> key
.
You are now capturing anything that displays on the screen or is input by the keyboard.
When all of the records have been displayed:
Click on the
Session
menu
Highlight the
Capture Session to File
line (which is checked) again.
This will turn off the capture process.
Windows-based PC / Telnet Version
Click the mouse button on
File
in the Telnet menu bar.
Pull the highlight down to the
Start Capture
line and release the mouse button.
All small window appears. Click on the
pull-down menu
at the top and pull down the highlight to
Desktop
and release the mouse button.
Click on the icon representing your floppy disk.
Enter a name for the search record you are going to store on the floppy disk in the entry line below the "
Save captured text as
" line and click
save
.
Push the
<return> key
.

This will turn off the capture process.
Congratulations. You have now captured a set of records of a search to your floppy disk.
You can edit it now with any word processor.
