The
Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI)
is
developing a structured set of (currently) 15 elements
("metadata") for indentifying the characteristics of resources
stored electronically, whether in databases, on the Internet, or
on removable media.
Identifier
- The unique identifier of the data element
Version
- The version of the data element
Registration
Authority - The entity authorised to register the data
element
Language
- The language in which the data element is specified
Definition
- A description of the concept and essential nature of the data
element
Obligation
- Indicates if the data element is required or when it is
required.
Datatype
-The type of data represented in the value of the data element
Maximum
Occurrence - Indicates any limit to how many times the data
element can be repeated for the specific resource.
Comment
- Description of how the data element may be used.
Organization
DCMI is a not-for-profit
organization that
involves many varied parties concerned with the management of
electronically-stored information.
These include the
OCLC, libraries, goverment and private information agencies,
internet/web organizations, and telecommunications organizations
and firms.
