Accessing
LAS via Telnet, Netscape, Gopher, &
Network
Scope
Online library catalogs can be
accessed in one or more of four communication methods, depending
upon what the particular LAS vendor provides
Standard access
methods
Telnet
For remote text-based access
to a catalog. This kind of access is rapidly
disappearing.
Web browser
For remote graphical access to
a catalog.
Gopher
For remote text-based access
to a catalog. This technology is almost obsolete, at least in
the United States..
Network
Terminals in a library are
linked over a local area network (LAN) to a computer that hosts
the catalog.
Terminals in a large system
with multiple branches are linked over a metropolitan network
or wide area network (WAN) to a computer that hosts the
catalog.
Access via network can be
text-, graphical-, or Web-based.
