Major Hardware Components of a LAS

Local "client" personal computer or terminal that accesses databases on remote computers.

• Major components of the local computer:
  • Microprocessor
  • Motherboard
  • Memory chips or semiconductors
  • Mass data storage
    • Hard disks
    • Floppy disks
    • CD-ROMs
  • Modem (communications) and/or Network Interface Card (Ethernet cards, for example)
  • Monitor / Display
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse (not always)

  Note: Local "dumb" terminal clients usually lack a local processor and storage hardware such as hard disks.

A "host" computer or "server"

• The host computer also consists of the same components, only there are usually more and, often, faster processors, multiple modems (America Online has hundreds of thousands of them) or network cards and higher memory and data storage capacities.
