ISBN
(International Standard Book Number)
- A number assigned by publishers
that uniquely identifies a book or other monograph.
ISSN
(International Standard Serial Number)
- An 8-digit number that uniquely
identifies a serial (any print or non-print--such as
microfilm--publication issued in parts with issue numbers and/or
dates).
- The ISSN International Centre
(Paris) administers the program internationally, but the LOC does
so in the US.
BISAC (Book
Industry Systems Advisory Committee)
- A standard for electronic data
interchange (EDI) in the publishing industry and
libraries.
- Large book distributors and
library consortia who service the acquisitions part of the library
community use BISAC for handling book ordering.

standards, and data and communications formats relevant to library
systems.
- These depend upon the the
architecture and functions available in individual LAS. You will
learn these as you work with them.
