Telnet
is an Internet communications protocol that enables the text-based
access to remote computers and applications that rely on
them.
Telnet
applications are available freely or for a low cost from such Web
sites as Download.com
or Tucows.
Good, free telnet software
packages include:
For the Mac: Better
Telnet
For the PC: Teraterm
Using telnet in
the classroom
Click on the Netscape icon on the
Macintosh desktop. (Note: if there is a
"telnet"
icon/application on the screen you can just click that to use
telnet
directly.)
When the Netscape browser is
displayed on the screen:
Place the cursor on the
"Location" or "go to" text box and click the mouse button. Hold
the button down and highlight the line.
To telnet to the University of
California's Melvyl
databases, type in:
telnet://melvyl.ucop.edu
When it asks for terminal,
type:
VT100
(This is just one of many types of computer terminal
interface standards.)
Note: Most remote
systems recognize the DEC VT100 terminal
configuration.
