Searching Sirsi: Search Everything

Definition

• Search Everything enables the search of a combined index of authors, titles, subjects, series, and "general" words in the catalog.
• This is possible because ever virtually every item in the library has a title, most have authors, all have one or more subjects, all have other information in the record, and some are parts of series.
• Booleans, nesting, and proximity operators can be used within the individual fields.

Usage

• Search Everything is useful when someone knows a part of a title, a part of a name (such as the last name), and other pieces of information about the item being sought.
• For Example:

  SEARCH TERMS	RESULTS
  old man and ernest	Produces 4 records, 3 of which are or criticize "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway.
  'how "to"' near Internet	Produces TK5105.875 .I57 H34 199: The Internet complete reference.
  horror not King	Produces a list of 29 titles, not one of which is by Stephen or Tabitha King.

Resulting Records, Viewing

• The result of a successful search is a single record or a list of records in the search results list matching each heading is shown in brackets to the right of the heading.
• To view an individual record
  • Click on the view button for the item you wish to see.
• To view previous or succeeding parts of the list of resulting records
  • Press the respective forward or backward button.
