Definition

• You use the Periodical Title Search to search for titles in the library in general.
• Rember that "periodicals" includes:
  • Magazines
  • Professional Journals
  • Newspapers
  • Books issued periodically
  • Newsletters

Definition

• Booleans, nesting, and proximity operators can be used.
• This is an exact search, but you can enter significant (non-stopwords, non-logical operators) words of the title in any order. Omit beginning articles such as: a, an, the, le, l', la.
• If any of those "significant" words is not in a single record, you will be taken to a title index to browse for the correct name. For example:

  national review	Produces 1 result
  national rowboat	Takes you to a list of periodical titles.

Viewing records resulting from a search

• A search with the correct title words retrieve one record or a list of catalog records containing the title words, usually titles in the MARC 245 title field.
• The number of records in the search results list matching each heading is shown in brackets to the right of the heading.
• To go previous or succeeding parts of the list, press the respective forward or backward button.
• To view an individual record or shorter list of records for a particular heading, simply click on the heading, then click on the view button for the item you wish to see.

Searching for Periodical Titles with the Title Search

• You can use the Title Search as well as the Periodical Title Search to specifically search for journal, magazine, newspaper, newsletter, and other Periodical Titles in the library.
• Unfortunately, the Title Search will bring up a lot of other titles (books, videos, etc) that contain the words in the periodical Title.
• Thus, it is generally better to use the Periodical Title Search when trying to find out what journals and issues that library has.
