• Boolean Operators are words and/or symbols (depending on the database) that are used in combination with search words and/or phrases to reduce or expand the number of results of a database search.
• SIRSI Unicorn LAS supports the following Boolean Operators:
  • and
  • not
  • or
  • xor

Purposes

• Generally, the purposes of Boolean Operators are to:
  • Target the search (Precision)
    • This means to narrow the results of your search to just the records that are relevant.
  • Make the search comprehensive (Recall)

    • This means to expand your search to ensure that you get all the possible records that are relevant.
