Definition

• Nesting using parentheses ( ):
  • Specifies the order in which Boolean operations must be carried out
    • Those inside of parentheses are executed first.

Usage

• Nesting using parentheses ( ) facilitates searching when:
  • You are not sure of which terms for a subject may be used:

    (cat or feline) and leukemia

    • finds records that have either:

      cat leukemia

      • or

      feline leukemia

      Note: Either set of records returned by the search could have both cat and feline in it)

  • You are not sure of the spelling of terms:

    (museum or musee) same art

    • finds records that have either museum and musee plus the word art in the sentence
