MELVYL is a unified information
system that provides a consistent interface to:
A library catalog
(CAT)
database containing a large segment of the records from all the
UC campuses.
A database of the periodicals
(PE)
at all UC campuses.
Commercial article citation
databases licensed by UC
These require a UC library
card; current status as faculty, staff, or student; and a
password to access.
A satellite- and cable-based
network linking all of the catalogs and library terminals of
the respective campuses.
Links to other library
catalogs and databases.
It was subsumed into the
California
Digital Library, which
is operated by the University of California as an overall shell
for a variety of information resources.
MELVYL's
consistent interfaces
MELVYL offers both Web-based
(graphical browser) and Telnet (text) interfaces to its collection
databases.
These interfaces are relatively
consistent across all of these databases, enabling the use of the
same basic commands.
The system provides extensive
help pages to make using MELVYL relatively easy.
