Searching MELVYL: Commands: BROWSE [bro]

Scope

• You use the browse command to search for the correct or "authoritative" forms of names or subject headings in the Authority/Heading Files.
• These files enable you to identify the standard, "correct," or more precise subject heading or see what variations there may be in personal names (PAs) or corporate names (CAs).
• You can only browse the following indexes:

  PA (Personal Author)	CA (Corporate Author)
  XC (Exact Corporate Author)
  SU (Subject)	XS (Exact Subject)
  UT (Uniform Title)	SE (Series)

Use the browse format in the following manner:

browse su cats	browse xs lions
browse pa hemingway	browse xc electronic frontier foundation

• Browse results are displayed automatically in a LONG display.

Displaying browse results

• To display browse results, type display browse [d bro].
• Examples
  • display bro
    • shows results of the browse command

Displaying the number of books

• To see the number of books associated with each heading, type display counts [numbers of headings]
• Examples
  • d counts 3,14-28
    • shows how many books under subject headings 3 and 14-28

Select

• The select [sel] command to find books containing the headings retrieved in a Browse search in the MELVYL catalog.
• Type select [sel] followed by one or more heading record numbers from the results of your browse search.
• Examples:
  • select 4, 5, 13 finds all books under browse headings numbered 4, 5, and 13.

    select 4.1-4.99 finds books with the Browse heading number 4.1 to 4.99 only.

    You can also select all

    • select, though, is limited to a maximum of 200 headings.
• Enter select list to selected browse headings from ones saved in a saved in a list.
• Use the display command to see the results of your select command.
• Modifying the results produced by the select or find command.
  • Use an add-on select command to modify the results of the current select or find result.
  • There are three add-on select options:
    • or select [number]
      • increases the number of results

      and select [number]

      • reduces the number of results

      and not select [number]

    reduces the number of results retrievals
