MELVYL Display

 

GUIDE to searching the MELVYL CATALOG database:

  • Use the FIND (or F) command to search for book and periodicals records.
    • The primary indexes for books include:
      • PA (personal author)
      • CA (corporate author)
      • TW (title words)
      • XT (exact title)
      • SU (subject)
      • XS (exact subject).
    • The main indexes for periodicals are
      • PE (periodical title)
      • XPE (exact periodical title)
    • Examples:
      • FIND CA CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

        F PA WALKER, ALICE

        FIND SU BACTERIAL GENETICS

        FIND XPE NEWSWEEK

     

  • Use the DISPLAY (or D) command to display the records that result from your FIND
  • command.
  • Type DISPLAY (or D) for a short display with author, title, and
  • call number. You can also use LONG, SHORT, or REVIEW options. For example:

     

    DISPLAY DISPLAY LONG D REVIEW

     

    - Type HELP at any time to receive assistance.

     

    - Use an EXPLAIN command at any time to receive an explanation. For example:

     

    EXPLAIN FIND EXPLAIN DISPLAY EXPLAIN INDEXES EXPLAIN COMMANDS
