Searching MELVYL: Limits

Scope

• MELVYL offers a variety of ways for constraining or limiting a search.
• A limit is functionally a synonym for the Boolean operator and.
• You can limit or narrow the results of a search by
  • date
  • form
  • language [lan]
• The limit(s) can be including in the original search statement after the find command, index, and search term.
• The limit(s) can be used to narrow the results of a previous search.
• The following are the formats for using the limiters.

  Limiting Index	Abbreviation
  [and] [and not] date [in mn/da/yr or year format] Note: Date ranges area also possible. Example: and date 1994-1998	--
  [and] [and not] added added newest [in last 7 days] added since [date] added from [date] to [date] added from [date] thru [date] Note: These are only for recently added items.	--
  form [medium] Note: Type help form to see the types.	--
  [and] [and not] language Note: Type help language for a list.	lan

  Examples:

  • f su internet and form software
    • reduces the results of a subject search on "internet" from 1048 to 1.
  • f pa hemingway, ernest
    • produces all the books authored by Ernest Hemingway.

      and date 1996-1998

      • limits the results of the Hemingway search to items published during those three years.

    NOTE: To see the records originally retrieved after you have already limited the search requires use of the backup or redo commands

Other ways of limiting searches: at

• at can be used to specify records in one or more libraries.

  Example: at ucsc

  you can get the records for all libraries again by typing at all.
