Searching MELVYL: Nesting with Parentheses

Scope

• Through the use of parentheses ( ), nesting:
  • Specifies the order in which Boolean operations must be carried out
    • Those inside of parentheses are executed first.
    • "In the article databases we have we have special programming that processes all of the Boolean ANDS for items in the same index first, before the OR or AND NOT operators."
  • Facilitates searching when:
    • You are not sure of which terms for a subject may be used:

      f su (cat or feline) and su leukemia

      • finds both cat leukemia and feline leukemia
    • You are not sure of the spelling of terms:

      f tw (museum or musee) and su rodin

  • finds records that have either museum and musee in them
