Searching MELVYL: Truncation (There is no internal "Wild Card")

Scope

• The number or hash mark "#" can be used at the end of a world or part of word (after at least the first 3 letters long) as a wild card for any number of letters.
• This expands the number of results in a search.

Usage

• It is useful for finding:
  • Multiple variations in spelling of a search term
    • Examples:

      f tw mus# and su rodin

      finds records that have museum or musee or museums or mus___ in the title

  • When you are not sure of the spelling
    • Examples:

      f su hierogly#

      finds records that have hieroglyphics and other words musee or museums or mus___ in the title:

  • Browsing subject headings
    • Examples:

      bro su rodin#

      finds 36 subject headings relating to August Rodin.

• NOTE: There is no wild card symbol for use in the middle of a word.
