Using NCSA Telnet

Scope

• This exercise makes 2 assumptions:
  • NCSA telnet is installed on your computer.
  • The Browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) that you are using has been made aware of of the Telnet as a Helper Application.

Procedure

• Bring up your Browser.
• Type into the "Go To" or "Location" field the word "telnet:" followed by the Internet address of the computer system that you want to access. See illustration, which includes the telnet address for the OCLC bibliographic utility.

• Two possibilities arise depending how the software has been configured:

  1. The following window may be brought up.

  • 
  • If so, type the address of the computer you want to access the Host/Session Name field.
    • Example: connect.oclc.org
  • Click on the "Connect" button to connect to the remote computer.
  • A window such as that below will be brought up.

  2. Alternatively, a window similar to the following may be brought up directly. (The Window below is the Log-in window for OCLC.)

  

Deleting Text in Telnet

• In NCSA Telnet on the Mac
  • Hold down the "Apple" or "Option" keys while hitting the delete (backspace) key to delete text prior to the cursor.
