Databases: (Fast Disappearing) Microfilm Collections
Scope
- Infotrac still has several
microfilm collections of journals for many of the articles cited
in their various databases.
- Some libraries are still
retaining these collections for a few reasons:
- They are a low-cost way of
getting the full-text of older materials.
- The materials are actually
microfilmed images of the pages in the original
publication.
- Resting inertia.
- On the other hand:
- The cost of maintaining the
collections and, in particularly, the microfilm equipment is
high.
- Most library patrons what
their materials online, accessible wherever they are whenever
they want the materials.
Locating the
microfilm roll for an article
- At the end of citation or full
records in many of the articles in the various databases, there
may be
- An abbreviation that shows
if the article is also available on IAC microfilm
collections.
- A number following the
abbreviation specifying
- The roll of microfilm the
article is on.
- The frame on the roll at
which the first of the article starts.
