Search Modes: Relevance Searching
Definition
- Relevance searching enables the
search of controlled indexes of fields or the entire article
content. You specify by clicking into the appropriate radio
button.
- It searches for words and/or
phrases plus:
- Their variants.
- Synonymous or related terms
and/or phrases.
- Consequently, you increase your
recall, but you may lose some degree of precision.
- Note that you can
NOT
s use proximity
operators in Relevance Search mode.
Search Functions
that you can use in Relevance Searching
- +
(plus) - This requires that any document that contains
the word or phrase following the plus must appear in returned
records.
EXAMPLE: +"united
nations"
- -
(minus) - This
requires that any record must be excluded and not returned if it
contains the word or phrase following the minus.
EXAMPLE: -Tasmania
- " "
(double quotes) -
These enclose any phrase for search as a phrase and not on the
individual words. for phrase searching)
