Search Modes: Subject Guide Search
Definition
- The Subject Guide enables you
to search an index of Subject Headings (and their Subdivisions or
more specific subheadings) for the specific subject terms you
need.
- Clicking on a desired term will
enable you to find the records to which that Subject Heading has
been applied.
Usefulness
- The Subject Guide is a good
place to start when you are unsure of the specific terms for the
subject on which you are trying to find information.
- It is also a good way of
narrowing a search by going from the general (Subject Heading) to
the specific (Subdivisions).
Usage
- Type 1 or 2 words in the Search
Entry Field.
- The database will bring up a
list of subject headings that begin with the first, as well as
many related terms and documents.
- For many terms, you will have
Subdivisions, which are subject-specific subsets of the parent
Subject term.
Important
Note
- The purpose of this course is
to learn more advanced searching, so I don't want you to use the
Subject Guide for anything more than expanding your vocabulary of
terms relevant to a search problem.
