Lexis: Introduction to the
Interface
Introduction
- One nice thing about Lexis is
that it offers a variety of ways of searching for legal and other
information.
- For example, you can use the
Search,
Research Tasks,
or
Search Advisor to search
for caselaw, codes, and secondary legal information sources.
- Even the
Shepard's
tab provides three ways
of doing citation analysis.
- The
Search
tab also provides you
with three ways of searching, including a command-base searching
that can be very fast when you learn all the abbreviations and
"dot commands."
A WARNING:
PROBLEMS WITH THE LEXIS INTERFACES
- Sometimes, one or another of
the various interfaces to Lexis documents will not let you search
it. You will get instead a window that says something like our
account is not authorized to search that way.
- We have gone over this problem
with Lexis for two years now, but it still doesn't seem to have
been resolved.
- So, what do you do. Try one of
the other interfaces to the documents. If one way doesn't work,
there is usually another way to access the same document.
